Market cycle distribution — regime counts across the 5 cycle zones

Where our assets sit on the market cycle. Bigger bubble = more assets there.

The 30-second read

What changed: Zero stocks cleared while 68 of 331 flash caution as chip stocks lead a broad pullback.

One stock to watch: $JPM, record quarter, a fraction below its 52-week high, one confirming print short of cleared.

What to think about: Whether Microsoft and Meta earnings ease or confirm the AI-spending anxiety that hit chips.

Market Health Check

Market health gauges: Credit healthy, Volatility elevated, Breadth mixed, Rates curve normal, Sentiment balanced

The damage sits entirely inside the market, not underneath it: nothing is forcing sellers out on a system level, yet the leadership group has thinned so far that not one name clears this week. Credit and rates stay orderly, which is not the same as healthy participation.

That gap, real internal damage with no external trigger, is what makes this look like a rotation rather than a top. Money is not leaving, it is changing seats.

Triage Board Weekly

11 sector ETFs positioned across the market cycle from STABLE to BREAKDOWN
Each dot is one of the 11 S&P sector ETFs (XLB, XLC, XLE, XLF, XLI, XLK, XLP, XLRE, XLU, XLV, XLY) at its current regime.

Sector pulse: Leadership is narrowing to two speeds. Financials leads on relative strength and its own cycle is already maturing, a late-stage signal. Health Care also leads, but from an earlier point in its cycle.

The soft spot is Technology. It still sits near the top of the momentum table. Yet its relative strength is fading and its own cycle has gone quiet. That gap lines up with this week's steep drop in semiconductors.

JPMorgan Chase ($JPM) — Observation · Very strong signal

JPMorgan is on watch, not cleared. Every layer we track, technicals, smart-money buying, and the macro backdrop, points the same way. What is missing is one forceful burst of demand to confirm it. Two readings sit a notch short: relative strength is at a three-month high but not a 52-week high, and analyst revisions are rising only moderately. Nothing here is waiting on a clock. Either reading flipping would change the classification.

Technical Picture

• Relative strength has climbed through the base, not just spiked to its high.

• At highs on below-average volume: buying without urgency.

• Roughly 10% above its 50-day average, 14% above its 200-day.

What to Watch

Setup invalidated if: a daily close below $327.33, the 20-day low.

Thesis intact while: price holds above $322, the 50-day average.

Next data point: no scheduled report until Q3 results, roughly 12 weeks out.

News Context

JPMorgan posted the highest quarterly profit in its history this month.

Net income hit $21.2 billion on $57.3 billion in revenue, comfortably above what Wall Street expected.

Equities trading revenue jumped 86%, and a long-held Visa stake added $4.6 billion.

Its market value is closing in on $1 trillion, a level no U.S. bank has reached.

Institutional Context

Quarterly fund filings from the first quarter show all three funds we track, Renaissance, DE Shaw and Citadel, adding JPMorgan, with none selling. Those filings describe the first quarter, which ended in March, so this is not this week's trading. Citadel used the same filing to trim Morgan Stanley, which makes the JPMorgan buying a specific call rather than a bet on banks generally.

Macro Alignment

• Credit spreads (a measure of how much investors fear corporate defaults) are calm, and VIX (the market's fear gauge) sits at 18.6.

• The yield curve is steepening, a tailwind for bank lending margins.

• Financials leads the rotation, yet Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, UBS and Morgan Stanley all sit in caution this week. JPMorgan does not.

Position Trader Playbook

A leader just beneath an old high has not broken out yet. Confirmation looks like a close above that high on above-average volume. Failure looks like a close back inside the prior range. The gap between them is the stock's recent daily range, the honest unit for risk.
